John Carney signed multiple pieces of legislation related to maternal and infant health aimed at decreasing infant and maternal mortality and expanding services to communities across the state. This is already happening in transformative ways. These statistics are telling, and indicate where we need to direct much of our focus. In Kent County, the mortality rate for white babies decreased by 43%, but it increased by 77% for Black babies. For example, while the 5-year infant mortality rate for Black babies decreased by 11% in Wilmington, it decreased by 23% for white babies. However, Delaware’s infant mortality rate is still higher than the national average and masks a significant racial disparity among the Black population. This is why The Delaware Senate and House of Representatives issued a concurrent resolution declaring this week as Black Maternal Health Awareness Week in Delaware - to unite us in bringing about critical change.Ĭertainly, Delaware can be proud of the strides we’ve made to reduce maternal mortality rates and combat maternal and infant health disparities in the state. When we unite in compassion and commitment, beautiful change can happen. While it is truly inspiring to see this happening nationally, some of the greatest motivation for all of us can - and should - come from right here in Delaware.
